It can also be because you have windows 10. This system doesn't like xxl related games and you need to look for some patches on the internet to make them work
I had the exact same problems, No DRM fixed it in my case
Make sure you've got the cutscenes and so on all installed on the PC so you won't need the CD anymore
IIRC these old games use 16bit DRM protection that is not supported in 64bit Windows.
Modding it out is the only solution.
