**Storytime** When I was around six years old I went to a local flea market with my Dad. There was a huge booth there, right at the entrance of the market; behind a prominent *Infogrames* sign, there was a grumpy-looking middle-aged man tending what must have been an entire shipment's worth of brand-new sealed Lucky Luke games for I think 5 Mark a piece (yes, this was before €). Of course I was so excited, that I immediately needed to have one. I already knew the Infogrames logo from the Windows port of the Asterix & Obelix SNES game from 1995, which I'd been playing whenever I was allowed to use our PC. It must have been the first video game I ever played, apart from some really old DOS games my father had lying around. And even though I wondered why this man was selling these for such a small price, I talked my Dad into getting me one. When we got home, everything seemed to go sweet at first. I opened the box, read the manual passionately to build my excitement. We installed the game, booted it up and played the first level together. My father left to do something else, I played some more, until finally the game would hang at a certain cutscene and crash the PC. I was really anxious, thought I had broken something. We rebooted the PC, the game crashed again at the same cutscene. And again. And again. When it finally dawned on me, that we had bought a game from a batch of broken copies, I pictured the grumpy salesman menacingly counting the cash he had made taking advantage of silly little kids like me and their parents' wallets. This day I learned that even when something looks shiny, is wrapped in plastic, and has an official logo on it, there's no guarantee that it's not just a heartless rip-off designed to take advantage of customers. I should have looked around some of the real booths tended by everyday people instead. Maybe I would have found a sweet grandpa's pocket watch or a nice selfmade painting...
