I'm probably going to release the widescreen patches for XXL 1 & 2 tomorrow. I've fixed XXL 1 properly now, so there is no hacking the camera position anymore. Everything (except the menue) is opened up to the sides, including the map. I've also managed to get rid of most of the disappering on the sides issue in XXL 2. The menue is still a bit messed up when you first start the game, but fixing that isn't really worth my time at the moment.

@pyramidensurfer Does the patch also play around with the view distance? I know from the GC version that the game actually renders quite a bit more than you actually see on the screen because it's clipped outside the view frustum. I don't know on which level you actually adjust this kind of thing but is it possible with reasonable effort to extend the far plane to increase view distance?

It doesn't at the moment, but I might try adjusting that in the future. My time is fairly limited in the next few weeks though, so it might take quite a while.
