Gamedev ramble: I think I finally managed to pin down why I'm so unenthousiastic about Unity.
It's the only major game engine without an actual selling point.
Unreal? That's the AAA game engine for big-ass 3D games with beautiful visuals and robust networking.
GameMaker? That's the engine optimized for 2D games with pixel graphics, offered at an entry level while still allowing you to use advanced programming.
Clickteam Fusion? That's the engine created entirely for people who are completely new to gamedev or are overwhelmed by textual coding (you can still use Lua btw).
Godot? That's the free-and-open-source engine that you can use and modify all for free, with almost any language you want if you put the work in.
But Unity? Unity doesn't have any special selling point that makes it stand out. You're not using Unity because it's actually remarkable, or because it does things better than the competition does. You're using Unity simply because other people are also using Unity. And these people are themselves using Unity because people are using Unity. Not because the engine actually looks better than the competition.
Unity is a jack of all trades, but a master of none. It's painfully average.

I believe Unity as of right now has more features than Godot, but it costs money and you can't make any modifications to it (no source)
But it has years of tutorials and other educational content. And I guess it is already an established game engine since many popular and big games use it
schmeling65
Additionally Unity is partnered with a company that was used for publishing adware
pegperegogaucho
Yeah it has its fair share of drama as well
pegperegogaucho
Apparently they are also slow on features
schmeling65
Unity is used for mobile games like subway surfer.
schmeling65
a true AAA game
pegperegogaucho
Yeah, I don't see a reason to resorting to Unity when Godot can create games for mobile as well (for free)
lepidopterus
Because there's tutorials

something else I just saw... Steam has an app AI Image Generator BUT NOT ALLOWED IN CN AND GER?!?!?!?!?!
I mean it still looks like you have to pay because on screenshots there are Points which can be bought, but
