Hm, I'm probably on the opposite end of the spectrum. I think OG was a huge step in the right direction for the series after I didn't enjoy XXL2 all that much.
Where XXL had a very simple but addcictive formula of "go through this corridor of levels, beat up some romans, solve a puzzle, beat up some romans, solve a puzzle and do it fast, fast, fast, while the electronic beat is pushing you forward" and there wasn't a lot of depth in the gameplay, the story, or even the level design, Olympic Games is going in another direction. It's slow and relaxed, the levels are interconnected and function much more as sections of one larger overworld, there's a bigger emphasis on (and variety of) puzzles and collectibles (I like how the shield upgrades are now permanent). The graphics and soundscapes reflect this slower pace of the game perfectly by presenting an inviting world with a clear sky, azure-coloured water, lush swaying grass, bugs buzzing in the background, gentle wind rushing through the scenes, the beautiful atmosphere of a small Olympian village with its temples and palaces and statues and mosaics. The soundtrack is _way_ better than XXL2 (but worse than XXL1, that's for sure). Also, I find it extremely satisfying how they just scrapped the boring lovestory of the Olympic Games movie and just went with "Alternate dimensions colliding! It's the end of the universe!"
Now, XXL2 is pretty much sitting between the chairs for me. For example: It isn't as hectic as XXL1 but not as slow as OG either. It is by far not as addictive as XXL1 though: I think the slower but yet not really slow pace of the gameplay is... unsatisfactory... Like, fighting Romans isn't fun, the jumps are timed badly and feel weird, I got tired really fast of the target hole mechanic, and so on...
So, yeah, I have to admit that I liked OG far better than XXL2. That game has a special place in my heart 🥰
"they just scrapped the boring lovestory of the Olympic Games movie"
You're greeted with this story in the first cutscene, but... wait, I don't remember how the movie went... Live-action films don't stay in my head well.
But yeah, they can never make romance in Asterix interesting. Like "I didn't start watching this... for *this*!"
I may sound like a hypocrite because I enjoy gay shipping art of Asterix characters, but, well, I guess I'm weird?
Nah, the lovestories in Asterix are just bad.
The movie is basically just the lovestory (plus a few more or less random scenes with Asterix & Obelix at the Olympic Games) for two hours. It's soooo incredibly boring... Doctormabus is just an evil wizard conjuring up methods for Brutus to sabotage the Gauls in the Games.
The game introduces the lovestory once to check it off the list and then completely abandons it. Princess Irene doesn't even appear (except as a background character with no face in the olympic stadium). At the end of the game it's like: "The doors to the alternate universes are closed again, time to celebrate!" and neither Irene nor Lovestorix are even mentioned 😝
bye-bye, lovestorix and irene, you won't be missed because nobody gives a shit about you
I enjoyed OG for not being as repetitive with combat, and i like the minigames as well
But god, do the wii controls suck
To me, OG had the best combat and most refined graphics their engine was capable of, but feels simply too small and short. I don't like the inability to skip dialogues...
It is too short, unfortunately.
And they should've added fast travel to keep the backtracking in check.
And the game is based on a movie about Asterix
Why is it bad that its based on a movie?
Cuz it would have been better, if OG wasn't a movie, but only a game
