It looks like it couldn't call Obelix to the catapult properly. Maybe, when you left the elevator in an unintended way, he was told to go to some specific location and when you got onto the catapult, two instructions collided.

yeah, you HAVE to use the cable car to the elevator. Otherwise the game crashes because Obelix's location is unknown

So if I use the cable car, then jump from the lift to the other side, I won't crash when I use the catapult?

If I remember correctly, the crash is not because you didn't take the cable car, but it's because you didn't open the drawbridge at 49:15.

I definitly know you get stuck when not using the cable car. DOn't know about the bridge though

You can see in the video that if you jump over the bridge but leave it open, Obelix will go to a particular spot and stay there waiting for the bridge to open. Even if you go backwards, Obelix can't move as he is stuck waiting.
