To be fair, I think most people here grew up with XXL/XXL2/OG.
XXL3 and XXXL feel completely different.
They shouldn't have been named the way there were ("XXL3" makes it sound like a sequel, where does "XXXL" even come from if it feels like a sequel to XXL3?") .
Bird's eye view instead of 3D platformer.
Player can only dash horizontally, not jump higher.
In older games you could sorta feel the violence you inflicted, it's toned down here.
Enemies were somewhat threatening in older games. Here they simply copy the 3D animated films' look.
Older games had banger music. I'm not saying the newer games' music is bad, but maybe orchestra isn't what guys looked for in a game revolving around fights.
I'm not sure how much testing was done with the newer games. The person responsible for the Crete maze should've been fired: I had a bad time with it playing as an ADULT, CASUALLY (I assume these games were made with kids/families in mind). In XXXL I remember having a dead-alive bug: I was running away from falling rocks, Obelix fell into the abyss and I lost all my hearts, but I could still go on.
XXXL discards currency entirely, collectible helmets are useless and are just here for achivements/sense of accomplishment, they don't give you any bonuses like concept art or anything
They made it so that up to 4 players could play XXXL, and while I'd be curious to see that: who would actually want to gather up in this game? Would you guys do it even with VC and a pirated copy (note this is local co-op, so only one person actually needs to have the game which they stream to their guests)? Who asked for an XXL3 rip-off with 3-4 players? I haven't seen anyone ask for it.
In my opinion, XXL3 needed more time for playtests, because even though my friend and I had a really fun time playing it, surprisingly. The game has very big problems in understanding what to do. Even if we had fun, we could spend half an hour trying to figure out what to do because of... If I remember correctly, localization, which at one point was simply missing, and not me nor my friend know French.
Oh god, I just remembered the dreaded stealth section in XXL3, I played in co-op with someone and we took turns attempting before I managed to get through.
Even though I'm a girl with a taste for cute and cartoon stuff, learning about XXL3 and XXXL was a disappointment for me
But if you asked me what the worst Asterix games are, from my experience I'd say OG on DS and Mansions of the Gods on 3DS
Mansions of the Gods on 3DS is just a boring set of simple minigames, it heavily feels like it plays safe with violence and never tries to be impactful in any way. The only minigame I can remember I may have liked is where I controlled Dogmatix and used a radar to find buried items, and maybe the potion brewing one.
You shouldn't even try OG on DS unless you're willing to tolerate arm pain. I dumped this one, doesn't seem worth my physical pain. Also, if you play it on real hardware and flop even one minigame in a tournament, you have to restart the whole tournament, in an emulator you can at least save-scum.
Anyway, I got carried away and this is the wrong channel.
You make a better reviewer than IGN tho
I may have hardly touched any Asterix games in the past couple of years (I'm into Worms now), but my past interest seems to help my memories
This the DS game ?
